DIY: HOW TO EASILY GROW WHEATGRASS IN A MASON JAR.

Updated: Oct 5

You’ve done your research.

Consulted your vet.

You’re ready to introduce the wheatgrass to you and your pet's routine.

Wheatgrass as a treat is the perfect alternative to having your dog and cat chew on lawns or your plants.

It's a win-win.

You can read about the benefits of wheatgrass for your pet in

Pet Health: 5 health benefits you need to know about Wheatgrass for your pet.

Don't worry! I put together an article for you too.

This is what happens when you take a wheatgrass shot

The best way to start with this health supplement is to grow it fresh, yourself.

So let's get started!

STEP 1: GATHER YOUR MATERIALS

  • 12 oz Jar

  • Soil

  • Rocks, pebbles, crystals, etc.

  • Wheatgrass blend of seeds

  • TableSpoon

  • Spray bottle

You should be able to find most of these materials in your home. As for the wheatgrass, you can find a blend of seeds from your local plant shop.

If you're like me and prefer to have everything delivered at your door, I’ve put together a kit ready to go just for you with:

  • A 12oz treat jar

  • Expandable soil

  • A wheatgrass blend of seeds of Rye, Flax, Oats, Barley, and Wheat

  • Special Instructions with a 'care' and 'feeding' section

STEP 2: ADD A DRAINAGE SYSTEM

Clean your jar with soapy water and add 1 inch of your choice of rocks. Sand can be added before the rocks if you would like an extra drainage layer.

Rocks and sand from your backyard or your nearest park are perfectly fine. We are trying to keep it fun, easy, and affordable.

When we grow wheatgrass in a jar there is no air circulation so it's possible your soil may become too moist and cause mold to grow.

There's no need to worry because we will be taking the necessary steps to avoid this.

STEP 3: THE SOIL

Add about 2 inches of soil to your jar of rocks.

In my kits, I added an expandable soil pod so if you have an expandable soil pod you will place it in a bowl and add 3-4 oz of water. The soil will intake all this water so you're going to need to stir and let sit for about 10 minutes.

Otherwise, garden soil from your local plant shop will work just fine.

You will also set aside 2 tbsp of this soil to add after your seeds.

I definitely do not suggest adding soil from your backyard if you treat your lawn with pesticides. This is what we are trying to avoid.

STEP 4: PLANTING YOUR WHEATGRASS SEEDS

If you don't have an expanding soil pod grab your bottle with a nozzle and water the soil until it's moist but not too wet.

Spread 1 tbsp of your blend of seeds onto the soil. If you have a kit, I have already sectioned off the measurement you need to add to your jar.

Maybe give it another spray to your seeds for good measure.

I know what you're thinking, "Wow, that's a lot of seeds. Are you sure I need that many?"

Yes, ma'am.

Each seed is one grass. You want there to be a good amount of grass for your pet.

STEP 5: PLACEMENT

Add 2 tbsp of your soil and press gently.

Water using your bottle with a nozzle until the soil is moist. Those of you with expandable soil, a few sprays will work just fine.

Avoid overwatering.

Place in a semi-dark location, away from direct sunlight and complete darkness.

Tips:

  • They love windowsills.

  • They're not so fond of direct sunlight.

  • Sing to them! Thank them for providing a healthy treat to our pets.

And Wah-la, you’re done!

CARING FOR YOUR GROWING WHEATGRASS PLANT

Your wheatgrass will take about 4 – 5 days to grow. Through this process, a bottle with a nozzle will be your best friend.

Try your best not to overwater. Remember, our jar doesn't have air circulation so much water won't be good.

When the first sprouts appear (1 – 2 days) you can move your jar to a sunnier location. Keep your grass moist until it reaches 3 inches.

Little webs are common. If they appear at the bottom of your grass clean gently with a toothpick.

When the grass reaches 4 – 5 inches, in 4 5 days, your wheatgrass is ready for you and your pet.

Your wheatgrass will wither naturally. You can also trim it so it can keep growing! To trim it, simply snip 1 inch above the soil. Repeat the care instructions.

And there ya have it!

Super easy right?
